Contact UsYour Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is responsible for decreasing the amount of NOx produced by your heavy-duty engine. NOx production is highly dependent on how hot your engine runs. For perspective, the hotter your combustion temperature gets, the more NOx gets produced. By decreasing this combustion temperature, you’re effectively making your engine more environmentally friendly.
So how does an EGR system decrease your combustion temperature? When your exhaust fumes exit your engine, a portion of them are recirculated back into your engine rather than entering your exhaust tubing. Before entering your engine, the spent exhaust fumes are cooled using an EGR cooler. The amount of exhaust that funnels through this cooler is dependent on your EGR valve.
There are two common problems that pop up on trucks that are equipped with EGR systems. Firstly, it’s quite common for EGR valves to seize up and malfunction. Since they’re constantly exposed to unfiltered emissions, carbon buildup can bog up the valve’s mechanisms and make it fail. A damaged EGR valve leaves your exhaust recirculation system uncontrolled, and will likely lead to severe engine damage if not serviced right away.
Every modern diesel truck on the road has a Diesel Particulate Filter, or DPF for short. Your DPF collects soot and other debris before it can exit your exhaust system. Since this component has a finite amount of storage, many will go into what’s called Automatic Regeneration mode once every few years. This burns off all of the stored material and allows your DPF to continue storing material. In some cases, your DPF may become clogged despite not being full. To remedy this issue, the technicians here at Impulse Repairs will manually activate your DPFs regeneration mode and clear the debris.
